Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes me out of Manhattan Island heading north westward through New York State which goes all the way to the border of Canada. We stop at a large glass blowing factory before continuing through the mountains eventually reaching the mouth of the Niagara River. There we explore Fort Niagara before heading upstream to the Niagara Falls and onto Buffalo.

Today's Journey

Departing New York City in the early morning, we head north westward through the New York State. The rivers are still swollen from the recent hurricane and also from heavy rain over the past couple of days in the mountains. Here we are crossing Susquehanna River cutting across the north east corner of Pennsylvania before returning to New York State.

Crossing the mountains of Letchworth State Park, worn down by big glaciers. Wind generators catch the prevailing winds which can blow strong through here.

In the mid afternoon we reach the entrance to Fort Niagara at the mouth of the Niagara River where it flows into Lake Ontario.

The old Fort Niagara with its original weapons still in storage. The fort was set up here at this strategic place to prevent invasions coming up the St Lawrence River and across Lake Ontario, both navigable from the sea.

We head upstream and stop at a lookout over the Niagara River Gorge.

A few kilometres upstream we reach the Niagara Falls. This is the American Falls tumbling over the edge and wearing back about a metre per year. The soft colours at sunset pick up the bright greens of the water.

One branch of the Niagara River behind the falls with Goat Island in the background. The waterfall is eroding about a metre per year, creeping towards Lake Erie. In a few thousand years the lake will drain away.

Heading into the nearby city of Buffalo, where we stay the night.
