Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me from Honolulu flying across the archepelego to the much younger main island of Hawaii, arriving in Kona Kailua. There I explore the volcanic coast along which Captain Cook was killed.
Today's Journey
I return to Honolulu Airport in the early morning to catch a flight to the main island of Hawaii. |
Flying past the small island of Lanai with its volcanic formations ending in spectacular coastal cliffs. |
Arriving at Kona Kailua airport set in the rubble of recently laid lava. Immedately I can tell this is a much younger island than Oahu. |
Reaching town of Kailua Kona at its small harbour as cloud covers the mountains. |
A cruise ship sitting offshore. There are no large ports here due to the lack of large features on this very young coastline of recently deposited lava. |
Heading south along the coast where the waves break on the very jagged rocks. |
Looking down the coast into the bay where Captain Cook made his final landing and was killed by the tribe here due to his previous trip bringing disease which killed a lot of people. |
Returning to Kailua Kona in time for a spectacular sunset as rain falls in the mountains. Hopefully the rain will clear overnight as I'm heading into the mountains in the early hours of tomorrow morning. |
Hulihe's Palace historic home in the evening as the sky quickly darkens. |
The vibrant main street of Kailua Kona. I need to turn in early as I have a very early start tomorrow morning. |
