Introduction to today's journey

Chitose, nestled in Hokkaido a little south of Sapporo, embodies a rich cultural tapestry shaped by its unique history and vibrant community. It was a strategic post along ancient trade routes connecting Hokkaido's indigenous Ainu people with mainland Japan. In recent times, Chitose has evolved into a modern city while preserving its cultural roots. Visitors can explore the Chitose City Museum to delve into its past, discovering artifacts and exhibits that highlight the region's transition from a rural outpost to a bustling hub. The city's festivals celebrate traditions passed down through generations, offering a glimpse into Hokkaido's enduring cultural heritage. Chitose's blend of history, community spirit, and modernity makes it a compelling destination for travellers eager to uncover the city's charm.

Today's journey takes me from Kiyosato across the bottom of the island of Hokkaido by train back towards Sapporo where I stop in Chitose to watch a parade in the evening.

Today's Journey

Departing Kiyosato by train in the early morning, I pass through the green fields and hills heading towards the island's southern coast.

Arriving in the coastal city of Kushiro.

Here I change trains to a more major line heading towards Sapporo. I climb on board the much faster train.

After initially following the coast, the train heads inland over a flat plain eventually reaching Obihiro.

From Obihiro the terrain gradually becomes mountainous with the tall mountains in the Daisetsuzan National Park just visible in the distance.

Crossing the heavily forested Hidaka Mountains at speed. Narrow farming valleys open out as we come down off the mountains to cross the plains towards Sapporo.

I stop in Chitose to the south of the city. A big parade passes by in the evening.

There are all sorts of weird and wonderful themes happening here.

A panel of judges lurk in the background as the different groups parade.

Even the army is participating.
