Introduction to today's journey

OTTAWA is the where the Canadian government is based. It reminds me very much of Canberra having a similar history. Canadian officials could not agree with where the capital city should be located, some saying Toronto to the west, and other saying Montreal or Quebec City to the east. Stuck in a gridlock, they asked Queen Victoria to assign a location, and she selected the (then) small town of Ottawa in between "eastern" and "western" Canada. The town was on the river system with easy boat access to all the cities which were either beside Lake Ontario or St Lawrence River.

Today's journey departs Toronto, continuing to follow the shores of Lake Ontario to where it drains out at Thousand Islands into the St Lawrence River. There we cruise around the river passing its many islands with small houses and the occasional castle on them. From there we cut across inland to Ottawa before heading back to the river in Montreal.
