Introduction to today's journey

WHEN I arrived in New York some days ago, Hurricane Florence was in full force to the south. Fortunately it didn't impact the northern states, but through North and South Carolina the hurricane caused extensive damage and flooding. The southern states are in the subtropics and are susceptible to regular hurricanes thanks to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Stream heading up off the coast. Although the hurricane has long cleared, the rivers are still swollen from all the flooding, but fortunately the main roads were now open.

Today's long journey takes me from Washington D.C. in the small hours of the morning, following the coast southwards. As the sun rises, I cross through North and South Carolina, crossing numerous flooded rivers. The climate and vegetation changes significantly as I head through Georgia, then onto the vast swamplands of Florida, eventually arriving in Orlando in the late afternoon in time for the sunset.
