THIS was the first day of the trek along the Inca Trail.
The trail meandered its way down the Sacred Valley with giant mountains towering on either side. Small villages of peasant farmers lived along the trail in the midst of the rubble of the mountains.
In amongst the villages were the remnants of Incan Villages. The most spectacular of these was Pakumayu at the junction of two rivers. This was a small farming village with terraced fields below. The farm had been very productive in Incan times. The secret of their success has long been lost in history as the modern day farmers struggle to survive in these rugged lands.
From here the trail followed one of the rivers upstream towards the high passes of the trail. We camped at 3600 metres above sea level about 600 metres below the first pass.
