AFTER four days of hiking the Inca Trail, I reached the prize at the end - Machu Picchu.
This ancient city was the Incan emperor's retreat, several days hike from Cusco, the capital city. It was a magical place set across a saddle in the midst of precipitous granite mountains. Even with modern construction technology, construction of such a city should be impossible, yet the Inca succeeded despite having primitive technology devoid of even the wheel.
Although abandoned five hundred years ago, a deep spirituality lingers over this city. The workmanship here is perfect. Irregularly shaped rocks were pieced together in a perfect fit to construct the buildings here. After all this time the city is still almost perfectly preserved as is the four day stone trail I had taken on the pilgrimage to this most amazing archaeological site.
